CCTV planned to help curb crime

CCTV is set to be installed in shopping areas in a Derbyshire town to try to crack down on anti-social behaviour.

Chesterfield Borough Council has agreed to invest in the cameras in Brimington, Littlemoor, Walton Drive (Bullring) and Loundsley Green.

Council chiefs said mobile cameras that have been previously positioned in Brimington had helped to reduce crime.

The permanent schemes will depend on the local Community Forums helping to fund the cameras.

A council spokesman said: "The trial period of CCTV monitoring in Brimington, utilising redeployable cameras, has proved that CCTV is very effective in reducing crime and anti-social behaviour.

"Providing cameras there, and at the other locations across the borough, should make a tremendous improvement to the quality of life for local residents who use the shopping centres."

He added that similar schemes in other areas of the town would be considered in the coming months.
